The Advantages of Green Jewelry

Green jewelry or eco-friendly jewelry is a huge trend, since more and more people learn and understand that the way jewerly is produced often causes major ecological problems, next to moral inhibitions. Especially the process of mining gold and silver in many countries creates a major pollution of the environment and huge amounts of carbondioxide are released in the manufacturing process. Ecologically mined gold and silver used for green jewelry is excavated from mining sites in a different way that is slightly more expensive but ensure the ecological pollution is kept to a necessary minimum.

In addition green jewelry doesn’t use any materials supposed to be toxic for the human body, another advantage especially if you suffer from allergies or irritated skin when wearning normal jewelry. Another important fact about green jewelry is that manufacturers ensure that human rights are respected when mining the material, important since alot of gold, silver and the majority of diamonds originates from third world countries like Africa with little or poor laws protecting the workers in the mines.

Green jewelry from fairly traded material is a great alternative for everybody with a conciousness for our environment, especially since it doesn’t look different than regular jewelry. The quality of the materials used is often higher since no toxic metals are used and ecologically correct jewelry isn’t mass manufactured.

Certification of Ecologically Correct Jewelry

Jewelry, especially expensive gems like diamonds almost always come with a certificate of authenticy when buying it online or at a store. While these certificates ensure the gems have the advertised value and quality, these certifications say nothing about the ecological aspects of the manufacturing process.

Unfortunately, there are no really certified seals that ensure the green jewelry you are going to buy is really free of toxic materials and only contains fair trade gems or reclycled materials. You have to depends on what the seller or shop is claiming, although some dealers already try to establish certain certificates of origin that al least proof the gems or materials like gold and silver are coming from a certain county or region and imply certain ecological and human rights standards.

A good way to get guaranteed green jewelry is going local and shopping for you jewelry at a local store that uses recycled materials bought in the region only. This way you can’t ensure where the materials originated, but you can be sure no unnecessary pollution was created in the actual manufacturing process.

Another way to ensure ecological correctness would be less elegant, but very effective: Only buy jewelry made from local materials like wood, feathers, seashells or similar, although this kind of alternative jewelry is neither very appealing nor does it have a lasting value.
